Higgy's Homepage Hints

"Wanna get hooked up on the Net?"
Get yourself a web page!

You're interested?
The best thing to do, is to just jump in with both feet, and get started!! Here's how.....

Get Established

This is quite easy, and FREE to do... once you're established, you're ready to get creative!

Here are some great HOST SITES to try:
Geo Cities
Angelfire
Tripod

Now What?

Experiment with the "Basic" or "Easy" Editors at your host site.

These will give you a very basic, generic sort of web page.... but you will be very pleased at the result, and you'll be HOOKED.... You'll want to learn more.

Here's a great place to start:
The "Home Page" Home Page

Get some graphics.

You will be amazed at all the websites dedicated to providing webmasters with TONS of free graphics for their pages!!

Most sites should include instructions about saving these graphics on your computer.

** TIP**
You can claim just about any graphic you see on the Net! Simply, right-click the graphic, and select "Save Image As..." and select the directory you wish to save in!!!!

Please be sure you read all disclaimers and "rules" at any website you borrow graphics from... beware of copyrights, etc... Some websites require you to add a link back to their site if you use their graphics, as they want credit... so be sure to give it to them! :o)

Here are some great links!!
The Clipart Directory
Texture Land... great background images!!
Jelane's Free Web Graphics

For more sites, you can do a search on Yahoo using the keywords "web graphics". **In web searches, be sure to include quotation marks for a phrase longer than one word.**

Transfer your graphics to your Host Site

Well, now you have a collection of graphics, but they are stuck in your computer. To have them show up on your webpage, you need to transfer these graphic files to your Host Site.

You will need an FTP program....
"File Transfer Protocol"
(It's a free download)
Don't let the fancy name intimidate you!!

Here is a link, sponsored by Geo Cities,
that explains FTP...also including a download link:

Well!! I love ambition! This is a good thing!! I have just the right web pages to help you out!!

First, let me recommend an outstanding paint program that you can download for a free shareware 30 day trial:
Paint Shop Pro 4.12,
which I used for all the text graphics at this web site.

Get it here:

Extended use of this program requires a registration fee, which I feel is well worth the money.

Now that you have your paint program, learn some tricks at these sites:
Paint Shop Pro Web Graphics

Paint Shop Pro 4.12 Tips and Tricks

Be sure that all graphics intended for the Web, are in the ".gif" or ".jpg" format.

Personalized URL's
http://www.your-name-here.com

If you're willing to shell out a few bucks, this is something I would highly recommend to everyone... especially businesses, to make your URL easy to remember and to the point.

Crank up the music!

Now you're talking!

The above music control-panel is "embedded" into the page. Try clicking here for an example of a "pop-up" music control-panel.

For web pages, sound files must be in the "MIDI" format. You will save and transfer these files the same as you would graphics.

Right-click on the "control-panel" that pops up to save these sound files.

Have I got a great collection of web sites for you!!
Tom's Top MIDI Files
The Bad Grrl's MIDI Fest
The Beatles MIDI Center
Attila's Punk MIDI
MIDI Jazz Network
Classical MIDI Archives

You can find many more web sites by searching at Yahoo, under "MIDI"

Click here for the HTML code to cut and paste into your HTML document to add music to your web page!! Includes HTML code for an "embedded" or a "pop-up" control-panel.

Add some Javascript

Once you're comfortable with HTML, you're ready to graduate to more advanced coding! Javascript are tid-bits of Java programming you can add to your web page to add a bit of zest that is otherwise not possible with HTML.

Try these web sites for Javascript to paste into your HTML codes:
